What is Nagula Chavithi?
The Nagula Chavithi festival is dedicated to the worship of snakes. It is observed on the fourth day of Kartik month after Amavasya. Nagula Chavithi, also called Naga Chaturthi, is celebrated in southern India, mainly in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The nag devatas are worshipped in Nagula Chavithi.
On this day, mother keeps fast for the well-being of their children. We refer to the Hindu gods Shiva as (naga Bhushana), Vishnu (Shesha thalpa sai), Kartikeya (naga Swarupa), and Ganesha (naga yajnopaveetha). On this day, people worship the Ashtanga and offer milk, eggs, and dry fruits. The Nagula Chavithi is observed on 5 November 2024.

Nagula Chavithi 2024: Story of the festival
Nagula Chavithi festival has many tales behind it. A legend of Nagula Chavithi tells us about the Samudra Manthan, where devas and asuras churned the ocean of milk to get Amrita. A snake was used as a rope to reach the nectar, which released a harmful poison.
Lord Shiva drank the poison and became known as Neel Kantha. But a few drops of it fall on the ground. So, to protect ourselves from poison’s adverse effects, we worship the snake gods.
After that, Lord Shiva wrapped Vasuki around his neck. The serpent says he is lifeless without Lord Shiva, and they share a true and divine friendship.
Nagula Chavithi 2024: Importance
Nagula Chavithi is mainly celebrated among women. Mothers worship the god snake for the well-being of their children. Snakes benefit us in many ways. According to astrology, the snake depicts Rahu.
We can avoid Rahu’s malefic effects if we keep fast on this day. We can also avoid other physical and mental problems, like anxiety, depression, etc. We celebrate Nagula Chavithi to take the divine blessings of snake gods.

Believers need to follow the rituals for worshipping Nagas. This year, if we do all the main rituals of Nagula Chavithi with dedication, we can expect positive results. These are a few rituals:
- You should wake up early in the morning and take a bath.
- You need to recite mantras to protect yourself from negative energies.
- Women worship naga devta and worship Ashtanga.
- You should offer Naivedyam to snake gods. It involves laddoos, sweets made from rice flour and jaggery.
- People should light Diya near snake Pitta.
- You should offer snake: milk, vermilion, flowers, black sesame seeds, thamboolam, sweets made of jaggery, etc.
- The idols of nagas should kept in temples of Shiva.
