Chhath Puja 2024: The Significance of Rituals and Its Historical Background
Chhath Puja, also known as Surya Shashti, is a time when people honor the Surya god by fasting and taking sacred baths. The festival is known as Chhath because it is celebrated on the 6th day of Kartikeya month, which is also known as Kartik Shukla Shashti, according to the Hindu calendar.

Nahaaye khaye: 5th November 2024 (sunrise: 6:15 Am and sunset 5:52 Pm)
Kharna: 6th November 2024 (Sunrise 6:15 Am and sunset 5:51 Pm)
Sandhya argha: 7th November 2024 (sunset 6:15 Am and sunset 5:51 Pm)
Usha argha: 8th November 2024 (sunset 6:16 Am and sunset 5:51 Pm)

Chhath Puja 2024: Rituals
Now, let’s explore how the rituals of Chhath Puja are performed. We are going to mention all 4 Chhath Puja days and the right way to practice them.
Day 1: Nahay Khay
The 1st day of Chhath Puja begins with the bath and eat rituals, known as Nahay Khay. On this day people observe fast and take a holy dip in the river. People bring some water from the holy river to sprinkle the water in food that will be prepared so that Prasad is filled with blessings and purity. This ceremony signifies the start of Chhath Puja.
Day 2: Lohanda
On 2nd day, people wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and offer prayers. They keep fast for the whole day till the sunset. After the sun sets, people bathe once more and pray to Chhati Maiya. On this day, they make kheer, roti, bananas, and white radish. They give these to the goddess and then eat them.
Day 3: Sandhya Arghya
On 3rd day, people offer prayers during the sunset. On this day, people keep fast and don’t eat or drink anything and involve themselves in preparation for Puja. Also, the basket of bamboo sticks, also known as Daura, is beautifully decorated.
There is s Supli a metal basket where all the puja important items are placed. Also, in Daura and Supli, many homemade items like Thekua and Puri, along with Chhath Puja fruits like apples, bananas, pani fall singhara, and white radish are placed.
Day 4: Bihaniya Arghya
This is the last day of Chhath Puja, and everyone goes to the nearby river early in the morning. All people wait for sunrise to offer Arghya. After all rituals, people kneel to Chhath Puja God, Surya dev, and Chhathi Maiya, to ask for blessings and forgiveness.
After that, all the people go back to their homes, and the people who keep fast break their fast by eating prasad.
