The story of Bhai Dooj comes from Hindu mythology. It is said that after defeating Narakasura, Lord Krishna went to His sister Subhadra. She welcomed him with sweets and flowers, performed aarti, and applied tilak on his forehead to protect him. In return, Krishna blessed him. This was followed by the celebration of Bhai Booz in honor of the bond of love and security between brothers.
Another famous story is that of Yama, the god of death, and his sister Yamuna. On this day, Yamuna invited her brother to her house and Yama gave her the boon that anyone entering their sister’s house on Bhai Dooj would not be accepted.

Bhai Dooj is important in Hindu culture. It represents a brother’s duty to protect his sister, and sisters pray for their brother’s welfare. The festival is almost like Raksha Bandhan, but instead of using Rakhi, the sisters apply tilak and perform Aarti.

The celebration of Bhai Dooj is beginning with the following traditional rituals:
- Sister’s prayers for her brother: On this day sister prays for her brother’s long life, health, and prosperity. She makes a special puja thali with sweets, coconut, a diya, roli, and rice for the rituals.
- Applying tilak: The sister applies tilak made from vermilion and rice on her brother’s forehead. This is followed by an aarti, she waves diya around her brother’s face to keep away negative energies.
- Gift exchange: After tilak, the brother gives a gift to his sister as a token of love and appreciation. In return, the sisters make their favorite dishes and sweets to show her love.
- Special Dishes and sweets: Bhai dooj is incomplete without traditional sweets like barfi, laddoos, and kheer. These sweets are offered to brothers as a gesture of love and care.
