Significances of the Pongal Festival 2025
In ancient times Pongal festival was celebrated on Sangam Age, making it the 1st harvest festival in Dravidian civilization. Also, it is believed that the festival was celebrated over 2000 years ago as Thai Niradal the 1st reference to this festival can be found in inscriptions discovered in the Viraraghava temple of Lord Vishnu.
Mythology says that the King of the Chola dynasty ‘Kulottunga’ gifted a piece of land to the Viraraghava temple for the Pongal festival. Day 1: Bhogi Pongal Festival
This day will start with an important puja that is performed on the fields by cutting paddy crops. The farmer and their families pray to earth and God's sun for their blessings and smear sandalwood paste on their sickles and plows.
Day 2: Surya Pongal Festival
This day is related to the worship of the god sun. A special dish is cooked on this day made with milk, jaggery, and rice. This dish is offered to the sun God for taking his blessings.
Day 3: Mattu Pongal
This day is related to the worship of Mattu as they are referred to in Tamil. They are bathed and cleaned and their horns are decorated with bright and beautiful colors. After offering to dish to the gods, then the cattle fed with the same dish.
Day 4: Kannum Pongal
This is the last day of the festival is meant for relaxation and entertainment. On this day people spend some quality time with their friends and family. This day is also considered auspicious for fixing marriages as it assures a successful marriage life.

1. North India – Makar Sankranti
2. Punjab – Lohri
3. Assam – Bhugali Bihu
4. Maharashtra – Hadaga

6. Gujarat – Uttarayan
