    History of Baisakhi

    According to mythology, Guru Gobind Singh challenged Sikh who was ready to give his life. In a crowd of a thousand people, 5 people volunteered. Instead of killing them, he gave the Amrit and formed a 5-member group of Saint soldiers called “Khalsa”.

    These 5 members representing the Khalsa were known as Kesh, Katchera, Kangha, Kirpan and Kara. From that day sprinkling of Amrit has become a common practice during the ceremonial baptisation of Sikhs.

    Also, this day marks the maturing of the Rabi crop and is celebrated with glory among the Punjabi people. Also, in Hinduism, Vaisakhi is observed as the New Year’s Day in many states of India.

    On this day Sikhs visit Gurudwaras in the morning to participate in common prayers. Granth Sahib will be bathed in milk and sweets will be distributed among people.
